Q: How do you open the detector to put batteries in?

Assuming the unit is already fixed to the wall then a tiny twist (anti clock I think) will release the unit from it's base. Replace all 3 batteries and refix in the reverse way

Q: How often do you have to change the battery?

Approx twice a year or until it beeps to make you aware of low battery
